NH1.com and Binnie Media are happy to announce that Lori D. has come to 98.7 The Bay in Dover.
One of the things I loved growing up as a kid was listening to my favorite radio station and hearing those familiar voices.
It was like a friend was talking to me right through my radio. In the business we call it “personality radio,” and it seems like we don’t have much of it anymore as we cruise the dials.
But, occasionally, we tune into a station and hear “that” voice. It’s warm and inviting, making us laugh and nodding our head to what the voice is saying.
Well NH1.com and Binnie Media are happy to announce that such a voice has come to 98.7 The Bay in Dover. Her name is Lori D. and she has been a staple in New England radio for over 30 years.
She graduated from the University of New Hampshire in the early ’80s with a bachelor’s degree in communications. Prior to graduating UNH, she was heard on the airwaves of the college’s radio station WUNH.
Lori then took an internship at a large Boston radio station. She worked hard and the powers that be heard a great radio voice and offered her a weekend gig, so this was technically her first real job in radio. She was only 19 years old. That’s quite the accomplishment!
Eventually, Lori migrated north to New Hampshire, taking a midday gig at a Seacoast rock station. This is where she really shined and began building her loyal listener base. She started a special noon segment on her show called “Electric Lunch,” which would play all those classic rock songs not heard on radio often. It became a huge hit with her fan base and the segment followed her to other stations she worked at later in her career.
One of the things I enjoy when listening to Lori on the air is her sense of humor. Back in the early ’90s most radio stations began switching over to CDs. The thought was that unlike records, CDs wouldn’t skip. That myth was soon exposed one day during Lori’s show when the CD began to skip.
She kicked on the mic and said something to the effect of “And they said CDs wouldn’t skip. Were they wrong.”
Classic Lori D.!
Lori was heard at a few more classic rock stations and recently she found herself out of work … for three days!
Binnie Media’s VP of Programming heard she was looking for work and called her and offered her afternoons at 98.7 The Bay. He had worked with her at other stations and knew her qualifications, and we’re thrilled she accepted!
She worked her first shift Sept. 10.
Lori’s life is a busy one.
When she’s not on radio, she is a wife to Jeff and mother to Molly, 19, and Will, 15. She also has run a successful mobile DJ service, Lori D Entertainment for over 26 years.
Lori said that Molly has been going with her to events since she was 8 and is now poised to eventually take over the business. What else can we learn about Lori D.? She’s a rock girl (but loves all genres). Her favorite band is U2, she enjoys reading Steven King novels and is a diehard New England sports fan.
Join her afternoons 2-7 p.m. on The Bay. You won’t be disappointed!
