In April 1993, director David “Mickey” Evans released a baseball movie unlike any other. The Sandlot, a coming of age story set in 1962, was about a new kid in town who befriends the neighborhood kids who play baseball pretty much every day.
It had a handful of stars with minor roles, including: James Earl Jones, Karen Allen and Denis Leary. The real stars, however, were the kids.
Its total domestic gross is over 32 million! Not too bad for a movie whose cast is mostly unknown kids.
AND… if you loved the movie, rejoice! The Sandlot is coming to TV with its original cast!
Director Evans sold the TV show and just got an order for the first two seasons! So, this IS happening. The reboot takes place in 1984, 22 years after the original. They now have children of their own.
That’s all Evans is willing to reveal. And if that wasn’t enough…there’s a prequel currently in development. To quote Hamilton “Ham” Porter: “You’re killing me, Smalls!”
