Luck of the Irish?
In October of 2017, Laura Terry, a 9-year-old girl that attends Summit School in Winston-Salem as a fourth-grader, put a message into a bottle and sent it off to sea. As part of a class science project, the bottle was launched by a boat captain 40 miles from the coast of North Carolina. Laura included instructions on how to contact her if the bottle is found.
15 months later, this past January, a grandmother walking on an Ireland beach found the bottle, which means the bottle traveled more than 3,500 miles from coast to coast!
Laura and her teacher, Susan Schambach, were contacted by Bridie Patten who wrote, “So excited. Laura we got your bottle, we will hang it on the wall.” The line of communication is now open for this grandma, her daughter, and her grandchildren with Laura and her classmates. They’re all pen-pals now!
This isn’t the first time Schambach has had her students learn about the mighty (and warm) gulf stream current.
