A new study from the brainiacs at MIT say by shooting a laser beam into space we might be able to contact life from outer space.
They compare it to “leaving a very large porch light on.” And say it might be as easy as that to get their attention, “if they exist.”
The “laser would be focused through a telescope and aimed toward space.” It would have to be powerful enough to stand out from the energy of the sun.
They say the technology to do it exists, they just need a telescope big enough. The study also suggests the same type of laser would be capable of transmitting short pulses that would be like Morse code.
The “beacon would be strong enough to attract attention from as far as 20,000 light years away.” Sounds OK as long as we don’t get giant moths flying around our porch light all night. So, ET, if you’re out there, we’ll leave the light on for you.
