Just in time for Christmas: Mac and cheese candy canes … SERIOUSLY!?
Just in time for Christmas: Mac and cheese candy canes…SERIOUSLY!?
Believe it or not, I am serious.
The yellow and white canes come in a set of six and have that mac and cheese comfort food taste.
You’re now asking yourself “who would sell such a crazy thing?” A Seattle, Washington-based company by the name of Archie McPhee that’s who.
Archie McPhee has been selling strange and amazing items for over 30 years.
The company is the brainchild of 52-year-old Mark Pahlow, which began as a mail-order business called Accoutrements that he ran out of his home in Los Angeles. He started by selling rubber chickens, lizards and other odd ball items.
Why is it called Archie McPhee if the CEO is named Mark Pahlow?
Archie McPhee was his wife’s great uncle who was a jazz musician that brought jazz music to the Orient. And so, in 1983, Pahlow named his first brick-and-mortar store after him.
The great thing about Archie McPhee’s is that the company brainstorms ideas to sell items that no one else would think of selling!
Pahlow once read a story about how spiders would crawl into your mouth and ears while you sleep … and it gave him a selling idea. McPhee’s began selling a product named “Ear Guards.” They were basically hotel shower caps with images of spiders on them. You place them over your ears to keep the spider from crawling into them. And they SOLD!
Obviously as a novelty gag gift, but the point is, he sold them!
Most of the items that Archie McPhee sells are gag gifts.
How about a can of “jinx remover?” It’s for that person who always feels they are jinxed in whatever they do. Just spray the nice smelling scented can on you and BAM … your jinx is gone!
OK, not for you?
How about the Nancy Pearl Librarian action figure? Think about it … what librarian wouldn’t love their own action figure? Based on an action librarian, it even comes with a detachable cape!
Other fun items include:
- Grumpy notebook: 3 notebooks for that grumpy person in your life. Includes “Things that annoy me,” “Daily disappointment” and “Fresh Rants.”
- Champion Rubber Chicken: Looks like that one that appears to be singing on YouTube all the time.
- FingerCats: Cats for your fingers.
- Punching Nun Puppet: Get your frustration out and punch something with this nun.
Pahlow has learned over the years to come up with products that are part of the pop culture, but not to get too cutting edge or ahead of the curve. They tried that once, and it was a huge mistake.
Archie McPhee works on 50-100 new products a year and offers smaller quantities until they are assured that they will be hot sellers.
The company was featured in Scientific America’s “Technology & Business Review” as well as Times “50 coolest website of 2005.”
In 2009, the company moved from Ballard to Wallingford, Washington, its current 11,500 square foot location which is west of The University of Washington.
If you have one of those hard to shop for people in your life, maybe Archie McPhee’s could be the best place to look. You can visit them here.
