It Could Be the Bittersweet End of an Era!

It Could Be the Bittersweet End of an Era!

It’s the longest continuously running candy company in the country, and it just happens to be in our own backyard.

At 170 years old, the New England Confectionery Company could come to an end as early as this year. The factory, headquartered in Revere, Massachusetts, will end its long run if it can’t find a buyer quickly.

NECCO has been known for several varieties of candies including Clark Bars, Squirrel Nut Zippers, Sky Bars, Mary Janes and most notably the often maligned NECCO Wafers and Sweetheart candies.

With flavors described as “Tropical drywall” and “Plaster Surprise," the chalky candies that kept Union soldiers going in the Civil War have seen a 63 percent increase in sales since the announcement of the company’s pending demise. The sales rush of all NECCO products has increased as individuals and candy shops are trying to get their hands on as much product as they can.

NECCO Wafers have seen the biggest demand. Not bad for a candy that hasn’t changed the recipe since its inception. If you do happen to get your hands on some, don’t worry about eating them quickly as they have an incredibly long shelf life!
