'Stop the Opium from Ever Leaving Afghanistan': O'Rourke Running in NH's 1st CD
Rochester City Attorney Terence O'Rourke, of Alton, sat down with NH1.com on Wednesday to talk about why he's running for Congress in the 1st District.
O'Rourke, a Democrat and military veteran who served in Iraq, wants more public transportation, better services for veterans, and he believes the fight against opioids starts in Afghanistan.
"What I want to do is take a holistic approach to this. Let's take a look at how these drugs are getting into our community," O'Rourke said. "What we need to do is stop the opium from ever leaving Afghanistan. I think that starts with a program of someone just purchasing and destroying it, but what I'd like to see is an international effort to move these (Afghans) off of creating opium and onto crops that are going to work in positive effects in their country and not be killing folks around the world.
