No. 5: Taking a Gamble on Kindergarten
NH1'S TOP STORIES OF 2017: No. 5, the legalization of keno
In an effort to fund all-day kindergarten, a priority of Gov. Chris Sununu, New Hampshire approved legalizing keno.
In November, several communities put the decision to a vote.
Residents in Berlin, Claremont, Somersworth, Laconia, Manchester and Nashua all voted to approve the game. Several other communities — Concord, Dover and Keene — rejected keno.
In Rochester, keno passed by a single vote and a recount had to be taken. That recount resulted in a tie, which meant the game was a no go for the city.
On Dec. 15, the first day of sales, customers bought over 5,800 tickets at nearly 40 locations statewide generating close to $40,000. Players won about $22,000 in prizes.
