No One Loves Breakfast Sandwiches More Than This Woman
If you're traveling west on Main Street on Long Island just after 10 a.m. and you're hankering for a breakfast sandwich, take a left on Peconia, take the third exit at the rotary, continue on Flanders to McDonald's. If you bypass the rotary and just take a right onto Nugent, you'll arrive at the Suffolk County Riverhead Correctional Facility.
Both McDonald's and the jail have a drive-thru. We understand how confusing this could be, especially after trying to figure out that rotary when your stomach is growling. All you want is to see the golden arches and smell all the delicious items.
Forty-four-year-old Lizabeth Ildefonso, of Jamesport, N.Y., found herself in the wrong kind of pickle when, according to the Suffolk County Sheriff Errol Toulon Jr.'s office, she drove up to the security booth at the correctional facility and administrative offices in her 2007 Nissan and asked the deputy sheriff on duty, Yvonne DeCaro, for a “bacon, egg, and cheese.”
DeCarlo then told her that she was at the jail, but Ildefonso “insisted that she really wanted a sandwich,” the Sheriff’s office said.
This isn't the first time someone has mistakenly ordered food in what they thought was a drive-thru. One month ago a Tampa man was charged with driving under the influence when he tried to order a burrito from a drive-up at a bank, thinking it was Taco Bell.
Luckily Deputy Sheriff Decaro had just attended advanced roadside impaired driving enforcement, or ARIDE, training earlier in the week. The training teaches law enforcement officers to observe, identify and articulate the signs of impairment related to drugs, alcohol, or a combination of both and noticed Ildefonso’s pupils were dilated, that her eyes were glassy and that she had a white powdery residue in her left nostril, the sheriff’s office said.
The proverbial icing on the cake, or bacon on the egg and cheese sandwich as it were, was that Ildefonso was operating the vehicle without a valid license. After failing a series of field sobriety tests, the breakfast fanatic was placed under arrest and charged with felony driving while impaired by drugs, and driving without a valid license.
