Sen. Hassan co-sponsors bill to help relieve student debt under bankruptcy
WASHINGTON — New Hampshire Sen. Maggie Hassan has joined 10 other Senate Democrats to reintroduce legislation intended to help those struggling with student loan debt.
The legislation that has been named The Fairness for Struggling Students Act would allow for privately issued student loan debt to be discharged in bankruptcy, meaning someone with private, non-federal, debt from student loans would no longer have a legal liability to pay that debt if they declare bankruptcy.
"The Fairness for Struggling Students Act is critical to those efforts, providing student loan debt relief for those in a financial crisis," Hassan said.
She went on to say she will continue to work to make higher education affordable.
This bill has been introduced to the Senate multiple times, the first being back in 2010.
This will be the fifth time that this legislation will be reviewed by the Senate.
