Rye to consider eliminating beach parking spots
RYE - It could soon be even harder to find a parking spot at Rye Beach.
The town's select board is currently reviewing the elimination of parking spaces and adding meters to the ones that are left to generate revenue.
Currently, the town does not make any revenue off of general street-side public parking.
Residents can obtain a select number of parking permits for $20.
The move comes at a time when visitors say it is already extremely difficult to find a parking spot.
The board said its reasoning behind it is because people park too close to intersections and crosswalks, thus making the area unsafe at times.
The board also is reviewing the use of a satellite parking lot that would offer a shuttle service to the beach area, but there is concern over the cost to fund such an operation.
Rye select board Chairman Craig Musselman tells NH1 News these are all just ideas in discussion at this time, and any action to move forward wouldn't occur until March 2016.
