Police: 18-year-old stole from cars before fleeing from, assaulting officers in NH
NEWPORT — An 18-year-old is accused of stealing from cars and assaulting a police officer in Newport.
The Newport Police Department received reports of a man going through cars in the area of the Newport Village Apartments on Whipple Road Tuesday around 8:30 p.m.
While officers investigated the area, they received a call that a man was interrupted attempting to gain entry into an occupied residence on Sunapee Street a short distance away.
Officers dispatched to Pinnacle Bait and Tackle and located a man matching the callers description as well as the previous descriptions from earlier reports. The man allegedly started to flee from the closed business.
After a brief struggle, responding officers took Ryan Gobin, 18 of Newport, into custody. Police said evidence found on Gobin linked him to the reports received earlier.
Gobin attacked and choked an officer while being booked at the department before being restrained, police said.
Gobin was already out on bail pending unrelated charges.
He had an arraignment Thursday and was charged with attempted burglary - class B felony, resisting arrest/detention - a class A misdemeanor, simple assault - a class A misdemeanor, second degree assault - a class B felony, theft by unauthorized taking - a class A felony and two counts of breach of bail - a class A misdemeanor.
He is currently being held without bail. He will appear in court on July 5.
The investigation continues and additional charges are expected, police said. Anyone who witnessed suspicious activity in and around Whipple Road, Sunapee Street or the surrounding areas are encouraged to contact the Newport Police Department at 603-863-3232.
