No more camping at Belmont town beach after officials find needles left by homeless
BELMONT - Town officials announced Tuesday that the Leslie E. Roberts Town Beach will now be designated as "no camping."
Officials say this will facilitate the Belmont Police Department's efforts to improve safety by moving the transient population out of the area.
Additionally, the public is asked to notify police when coming across discarded drug paraphernalia like needles in order to help keep the area clean and safe.
Fire Department Lieutenant and Inspector Mike Newhall said it is apparent that there had been a homeless population living at the beach. The area around the beach has also been known to be a hangout for drug users.
Newhall estimated that 95 percent of the needles found have been on land and not in the lake.
