WELLFLEET, Mass. — Two male sharks died likely from the extreme cold.
The thresher sharks, both about 14 feet long, were found on Wellfleet and Skaket beaches.
The Atlantic White Shark Conservancy worked with the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries and NOAA Fisheries Service to remove the sharks from the beaches. The conservancy said morphometric data, organs, and tissue samples will be examined once they thaw, but the sharks likely stranded "due to cold shock."
It is not typical to find thresher sharks stranded but the beaches are the same ones on which sea turtles with cold shock have been found, the conservancy wrote.
