Coast Guard Kept Busy With Pair Of Searches Off New England
SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — The Coast Guard has suspended a search that was launched following the discovery of a capsized kayak and reports that another distress call had a happy ending.
Search and Rescue Coordinator Chris Berry said Sunday that the search for a kayaker was suspended pending further developments.
The kayak floating off Little Diamond Island had a dry bag and damaged cellphone inside it. But Berry said no one was reported missing, and there's no sign of distress.
A call about someone being in the water Saturday night triggered another search. He said it turned out to be someone lost in the fog in a skiff. He said the occupants made it to safety on Chebeague Island, not realizing the distress call had triggered a search.
