Maine marathon mishap prevents runners from qualifying for Boston Marathon
PORTLAND, Maine — A major mess up prevented some Maine runners from qualifying for the Boston marathon.
According to the radio station WGAN, volunteers set up a detour at mile 12 that added half a mile to course.
This made the Maine Coast Marathon a total of 26.7 miles instead of 26.2.
About 500 of the runners had taken the detour before it was discovered and fixed.
An apology was later issued by the race director but qualifying times were never changed.
