Home remedies for ice dams to prevent leaks in your home
CONCORD - Many Granite Staters are dealing with not just heavy snow on their roofs, but ice dams too.
Ice dams prevent melting snow and ice from dripping off your roof. With nowhere to go, it can cause major leaking problems inside your home.
Tom Worthington, store manager at Rocky's Ace Hardware in Concord says they have been really busy lately.
"They're getting the ice dams because they're actually losing heat out of their house," Worthington said. "The heat is coming up through their attic and through their vents and it's melting the snow that's on the roof."
Hardware stores like Rocky's sell calcium chloride pucks that can help melt the ice. Worthington says you can throw the pucks on the roof and try and space them out about 4 feet apart.
Another remedy is to fill socks with calcium chloride that will create channels, allowing the melting ice to drip off the building. A video that went viral from a hardware store in Rhode Island shows how you can easily do it yourself. Ladies pantyhose can also be used.
Worthington says if you have questions, feel free to stop by and ask.
