Governor seeks federal disaster declaration for January Blizzard
CONCORD - New Hampshire's governor is asking President Barack Obama to declare costs of snow removal from a late January blizzard a major disaster to clear the way for federal aid.
Gov. Maggie Hassan pegs costs of snow removal in the southern three counties of Strafford, Rockingham and Hillsborough at about $3.3 million during the Jan. 26-28 blizzard.
Hassan in her letter says the storm dumped 2-to-3 feet of snow in the southern portion of the state and led to the collapse of 18 roofs.
She said the state Department of Transportation had 648 workers out clearing roads during the blizzard and hired nearly 900 private trucks to help plow and remove snow.
A major disaster declaration would make the state eligible for federal emergency assistance.
