Fire official: Needles, trash left by homeless at Belmont town beach becoming problem
BELMONT — A town fire official told selectmen on Monday that trash and drug needles were being left by homeless people at the town beach.
According to the Laconia Citizen, the town beach on Winnisquam Lake has been seeing an overwhelming amount of trash left at sites along the beach near the wooded area.
Fire Department Lieutenant and Inspector Mike Newhall said it is apparent that there is a homeless population living at the beach. The area around the beach has also been known to be a hangout for drug users.
Newhall estimated that 95 percent of the needles found have been on land and not in the lake, according to the paper.
Officials are going to increase their patrols on the beach and the surrounding area.
