OPINION: Jimmy Garoppolo’s Record Breaking Contract Nauseates Me
Let me start by saying, I really enjoy American football. I think that it's a great way to be entertained next to music.
I am a Patriot fan like most here in New England. Is Tom Brady my favorite QB? You bet.
I also have admiration for his former up-and-coming backup "Jimmy G". Would he be the next TB12 for my favorite team? Yes, or so I thought. In any case, I was thrilled for him as a player who has earned his stripes, so to speak.
Then Friday, I see that he was signed to an INSANE five-year contract worth $137.5 million. “The 49ers agreed to terms on a five-year contract with Jimmy Garoppolo worth $137.5 million," NFL Network's Mike Garafolo reported, per a source informed of the decision. "The deal is the largest in NFL history on an average-per-year basis.”
I get that these guys work really hard for this level of pay, and I don't totally question "their worth." However, as an individual who has had plenty of first responders in my life — family members and friends that include policemen, firefighters and EMTs — I could make a long list of tasks they complete and money they spend to actually be able to DO their job.
Did I mention enlisted personnel in our armed forces? I can tell you as a U.S. Veteran, I never enlisted because of the pay ... but that's a different story.
I find this contract Garoppolo signed borderline nauseating. Congrats Jimmy G really, but this is just a reminder of some of the priorities in this country and the level at which it continues. Come on! Really.
