Belt homers to back Peavy; Giants edge Dodgers 2-1
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) Brandon Belt hit a two-run homer off rookie Julio Urias in the sixth inning to help Jake Peavy earn his 150th win, and the San Francisco Giants beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 2-1 on Sunday night.
Belt struck out in his first two plate appearances against the 19-year-old Urias before homering into the right-center stands on a 1-1 pitch. Joe Panik singled with one out ahead of Belt's home run.
Joc Pederson homered and Chase Utley had three hits for Los Angeles. The Dodgers fell five games behind the first-place Giants in the NL West after losing the final two games of the series.
Urias, the Dodgers' highly touted left-hander making his fourth career start, exited after Belt's home run. Urias (0-2) matched his major league high with seven strikeouts and allowed four hits over 5 1/3 innings his longest outing of the year.
Peavy, 16 years older than Urias, was slightly better.
Coming off a rough outing in St. Louis, Peavy (3-6) tossed six scoreless innings and gave up four hits with three strikeouts and one walk. He became the sixth active pitcher in the majors with 150 wins.
Six relievers combined to pitch the final three innings. Santiago Casilla worked the ninth for his 13th save.
Dodgers third baseman Justin Turner was ejected for arguing a called third strike to end the eighth with the potential tying run on base.
Belt's home run was his second in four games and eighth this season.
Pederson homered into McCovey Cove, a solo shot off Hunter Strickland in the seventh. That made Pederson the second visiting player to hit a home run into the water beyond the right-field arcade this season. Ben Zobrist of the Cubs did it on May 20.
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts had A.J. Ellis catching Urias primarily because of Ellis' previous experience against the Giants. Ellis also caught Urias' start against the Cubs on June 2. Yasmani Grandal was behind the plate for the other two.
NET BAT 2.0
One day after Buster Posey's bat flew out of his hands and got stuck high in the protective netting behind home plate, it happened again in the slugger's first at-bat against Urias. This time Posey's bat got stuck in the lower part of the netting after he struck out.
