'Smell of Infection' Overwhelmed Rescuers of Stray Dog Who Had Exposed Bones

It takes a village.
That's the Animal Rescue League of New Hampshire's message to its Facebook followers about helping a dog named George heal.
On Tuesday, the shelter posted shocking photos of George's injuries and emaciated body. George was found last week by a hiker in the woods in Merrimack.
"When George was tenderly walked into the building, the smell of infection quickly spread through the hallways," ARL wrote in the post. "Even an untrained nose would know something was wrong. What we were presented with was a skeleton of a dog whose four legs, sides, stomach, and genitalia all suffered significant trauma. Cuts were actively bleeding, and in places, bone was exposed. As I’m sure your hearts are breaking now, our hearts broke at the sight of him on day one."
Tuesday marked the end of George's "stray hold," a seven-day legal requirement the shelter had to follow. He now belongs to the shelter family as no one has come forward to say they are his owner.
The shelter said George weighed just 49 pounds when he came to the shelter while a typical male German shepherd weighs between 70 and 90 pounds.
George is now on his way to recovery.
