SANDWICH, Mass. — Two seals that had been rehabilitated by the National Marine Life Center on Cape Cod will be released back into the ocean Tuesday afternoon.
The pups, referred to as "sealebrities" by the center, are named Giseal Bundchen and Sealonardo DiCaprio. They will head back to the Atlantic Ocean in a public event at Scusset Beach State Reservation in Sandwich, Mass., at 4:30 p.m..
Named for model and wife of New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, Bundchen was found stranded June 9 on Chebeague Island, Maine, by Marine Mammals of Maine. She has an ear infection known as otitis media and will be satellite tagged to observe her depth in the wild.
DiCaprio was found stranded on Great Spruce Head Island, Maine, on May 25. He was rescued by College of the Atlantic at only 12 pounds and now weighs over 50 pounds.
Staff at the center feed young rescued seals with a milk-based formula through a feeding tube five times a day. Veterinary staff administer medication and treat any medical issues the seals may have. Once they grow, the animals are switched to a fish-based formula and eventually are taught to eat fish on their own.
The rescue group plans on streaming the event on Facebook Live.
