22 ducks found dead in Penacook
PENACOOK - Conservation officers are trying to find out the source of contamination that led to the deaths of 22 mallard ducks near a Penacook housing development.
According to a news release, on Saturday morning an injured duck was brought to the "Wings of The Dawn" rehabilitation center in Henniker. The duck was found to be suffering from oil contamination, and a worker from the center went to where the duck had been found at a storm run-off basin at the intersection of Boroughs Road and Alice Drive in Penacook. After discovering more ducks and some kind of oil contaminant, the Concord Fire Department and Fish and Game officials were called to the scene.
4 ducks were found still alive and are being treated. Some others were able to walk and fly away under their own power.
The Department of Environmental Services is investigating the cause of the spill, which according to a release appeared similar to use motor oil.
