5 Things You May Not Know About Rascal Flatts

Since they were formed in Columbus Ohio in 1999, country trio Rascal Flatts has been burning up the country charts and air waves with catchy songs like "Take Me There," head bobbers like "Me And My Gang," and ballads like "What Hurts The Most."

Their 15-year longevity has won them recognition from the likes of: The American Country Music Awards, Country Music Awards, People's Choice Awards, The Grammys and a membership to The Grand Old Opry. Impressive resume.

However, what do we really know about the band? Here are five things you may not have known about Rascal Flatts:

1. Two Members Are Related

Gary LeVox (pronounce La-Voy) and bass guitarist Jay DeMarcus are second cousins. After working on several projects in multiple bands they decided that they worked well together, took the plunge and formed a band.

2. Where Did the Name Rascal Flatts Come From?

It's quite a simple story. When Lyric Records was about to sign them to their label, the boys still didn't have a name for the band. That's when a buddy of theirs came to the rescue. He suggested that they could use the name of a band that he started back in the 60's. So, Rascal Flatts it was. (Wonder if the buddy later regretted not get residuals for the name?)

3. Joe Don Rooney Almost Never Made It

Gary and Jay had reservation about Joe Don Rooney playing in the band. One night when Rascal Flatts part-time guitarist at the time was unable to make a gig, Jay asked Joe Don if he could fill in. Gary and Jay's reservations about JoeDon's abilities as a guitarist were put to rest that night. The trio was solidly formed.

4. Considered a "Cross-Over" Band

They may be labeled a "country band," however, the song "What Hurts The Most" played on multiple radio formats and was well received on all of them. In concert, it's not uncommon for them to break out into an Aerosmith or Led Zeppelin song!

5. Cameo on TV

And finally, not only is Rascal Flatts an award-winning band, they also had some success on the small screen. They had a cameo in 2010 on the CBS's "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. Jay was also guest star on ABC's "Nashville."
